The characteristic red patches covered with silvery scales appear most often on the elbows, knees or scalp. But did you know that psoriasis is <strong>not just a skin problem<\/strong>?  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system is working at full speed&#8230; just that little bit too much. The skin begins to renew itself several times faster than it should, resulting in lumps, scales and inflammation instead of a smooth surface. <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Facts and myths about psoriasis<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <strong>It does not infect!<\/strong> &#8211; although it looks menacing, you can&#8217;t get it either by touch or by sharing objects.<br> <strong>It has to do with genes<\/strong> &#8211; if someone in the family has psoriasis, the risk increases.<br> <strong>Stress is enemy number one<\/strong> &#8211; strong emotions often cause sudden rashes.<br> <strong>Diet matters<\/strong> &#8211; in some people, psoriasis mildens when they limit alcohol, sugar and processed foods.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How do you live with it?<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, psoriasis is not just an &#8220;aesthetic nuisance.&#8221; It can affect self-confidence, relationships with others, and even choice of clothing or leisure activities. Interestingly, up to 30% of sufferers also struggle with <strong>psoriatic arthritis<\/strong>, which causes pain and stiffness.  <\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A modern approach to treatment<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until a few years ago, the options were limited &#8211; steroid ointments and phototherapy. Today, medicine is going a step further: <\/p><ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><li><strong>Biological drugs<\/strong> are available that act on the source of the problem in the immune system,<\/li><li>There is more and more talk about <strong>anti-inflammatory diets<\/strong> and the role of the microbiome,<\/li><li>and psychologists stress the importance of emotional support.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Why is it worth talking about?<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because psoriasis is a disease that up to <strong>1 million people<\/strong> in Poland live with. This is a huge group that often still faces misunderstanding or hurtful comments.
